Randolph County gets final multiplier, May 7

Randolph County has been issue a final property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000. The equalization factor, often referred to as the multiplier, is the method used to achieve uniform property assessment amount counties.
This is important since some of the 6,600 local taxing districts in the state overlap into two or more counties such as school districs, junior college and fire protection districts.
If there were no equalization among the counties, inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would exist.
Assessments in Randolph County are at 33.29 percent of the market value based on property sales in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The equalization factor currently being assigned is for the 201 taxes, payable in 2012. Last year’s factor was also 1.0000.
The factor is determined each year for each county by comparing the price of individual properties sold over the past three years, to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments.
A change in the equalization factor does not mean total property taxes bills will increase of decrease since tax bills are determined by local taxing bodies when they request money each year to provide services to local citizens.
If the amount requested by the taxing districts is not greater than the amount received the previous year, then total property taxes will not increase, even if assessments increase.
The assessed value of an individual property determines what portion of the tax burden a specific taxpayer will assume. That person’s portion of tax responsibility is not changed by the multiplier.
